As international travel continued to increase, T-Mobile customers relied more heavily on their mobile devices to stay connected while abroad. While T-Mobile already offered extensive international roaming support across hundreds of destinations, much of the information about coverage, calling rates, and roaming passes lived primarily on the website. This created friction for customers who were already managing their accounts through the T-Mobile mobile application.
The objective of this project was to bring international roaming discovery and management directly into the native T-Mobile app. By integrating these capabilities into the mobile experience, customers could easily review their plan’s international benefits, explore roaming options, and activate international passes before or during travel.
The primary goal was to simplify how customers understood and managed international roaming from their mobile devices.
Centralizing international travel features within the app
Customers needed a convenient way to access roaming information without navigating to external webpages or contacting customer support.
Clarifying roaming coverage and benefits
International plans can be confusing, particularly when users are unsure about data limits, calling rates, or what is included with their existing plan. The experience needed to clearly communicate coverage details in a way that was easy to understand.
Streamlining activation of roaming passes
For customers who needed additional high-speed data or unlimited calling while abroad, the interface needed to make it simple to explore and activate roaming passes directly within the app.
Reducing support inquiries related to international travel
By presenting roaming information clearly and enabling self-service activation of passes, the experience aimed to reduce the need for customers to contact support before traveling internationally.
I worked on this initiative as the product designer responsible for the user experience and interface design of the international roaming features within the T-Mobile app.
My responsibilities included:
Designing the user flows for discovering and activating international roaming options
Creating interface layouts that integrated seamlessly with the existing T-Mobile mobile app
Organizing complex roaming information into clear, easy-to-understand content structures
Collaborating with product managers and engineering teams to ensure the design supported technical and business requirements
Iterating on the experience to ensure customers could quickly understand their options when traveling internationally
One of the primary challenges of the project was presenting complex roaming information in a way that felt simple and approachable for travelers.
Customers often want quick answers before or during a trip, such as:
Will my phone work in the country I’m visiting?
How much data do I get while traveling?
How much will calls or texts cost?
Can I add additional data if I need it?
The design focused on surfacing the most important information first while allowing customers to explore additional details when needed. Coverage information, roaming benefits, and upgrade options were organized into a clear hierarchy so users could quickly determine whether their existing plan met their travel needs.
For customers who required additional connectivity, the interface also presented available roaming passes that offered higher data allowances and expanded calling options for specific durations.
Because the feature was integrated directly into the T-Mobile mobile application, the design had to align closely with the existing design language and navigation patterns already familiar to customers.
Consistency across typography, layout, and interaction patterns ensured that the roaming features felt like a natural extension of the broader account management experience.
The interface also needed to support users who might be accessing the feature while already traveling internationally, meaning the design prioritized clarity, speed, and minimal friction.
Integrating international roaming management into the T-Mobile app significantly improved how customers prepared for and managed connectivity while traveling abroad.

Easily check their international coverage before traveling
Understand roaming benefits included with their current plan
Activate additional roaming passes directly within the app
Manage connectivity options while abroad without contacting support
